چکیده

We study the minimum number of constraints needed to formulate random instances of the maximum stable set problem via LPs (more precisely, linear extended formulations), in two distinct models. In the uniform model, the constraints of the LP are not allowed to depend on the input graph, which should be encoded solely in the objective function. There we prove a 2Ω(n/ log n) lower bound with probability at least 1− 2−2 for every LP that is exact for a randomly selected set of instances; each graph on at most n vertices being selected independently with probability p > 2−( n/4 2 )+n. In the non-uniform model, the constraints of the LP may depend on the input graph, but we allow weights on the vertices. The input graph is sampled according to the G(n, p) model. There we obtain upper and lower bounds holding with high probability for various ranges of p. The bounds are close as there is only an essentially quadratic gap in the exponent. Finally, we state a conjecture to close the gap.

1 Parallel Semidefinite Programming and Combinatorial Optimization STEVEN

The use of semidefinite programming in combinatorial optimization continues to grow. This growth can be attributed to at least three factors: new semidefinite relaxations that provide tractable bounds to hard combinatorial problems, algorithmic advances in the solution of semidefinite programs (SDP), and the emergence of parallel computing. Solution techniques for minimizing combinatorial probl...

The Maximum-Weight Stable Matching Problem: Duality and Efficiency

Given a preference system (G, ≺) and an integral weight function defined on the edge set of G (not necessarily bipartite), the maximum-weight stable matching problem is to find a stable matching of (G, ≺) with maximum total weight. We study this N P-hard problem using linear programming and polyhedral approaches, and show that the Rothblum system for defining the fractional stable matching poly...

Matching Terrains under a Linear Transformation∗

We study the problem of matching two polyhedral terrains, where one can be changed vertically by a linear transformation of the third coordinate (scaling and translation). We give an algorithm that minimizes the maximum distance over all linear transformations in O(npolylog n) expected time. We also study matching two 1-dimensional terrains, and give a (1+ ε)-approximation algorithm for minimiz...

Robust portfolio selection with polyhedral ambiguous inputs

Ambiguity in the inputs of the models is typical especially in portfolio selection problem where the true distribution of random variables is usually unknown. Here we use robust optimization approach to address the ambiguity in conditional-value-at-risk minimization model. We obtain explicit models of the robust conditional-value-at-risk minimization for polyhedral and correlated polyhedral am...

Complexity and approximation ratio of semitotal domination in graphs

A set $S subseteq V(G)$ is a semitotal dominating set of a graph $G$ if it is a dominating set of $G$ andevery vertex in $S$ is within distance 2 of another vertex of $S$. Thesemitotal domination number $gamma_{t2}(G)$ is the minimumcardinality of a semitotal dominating set of $G$.We show that the semitotal domination problem isAPX-complete for bounded-degree graphs, and the semitotal dominatio...
